What the Ale: Beer + Hanson = Awesome

Beer + Hanson = Awesome
Fans of Hanson got a special treat as Taylor Hanson helped celebrate the beer of the month at Leon’s.
In Tuesday at Leon’s, 3301 S. Peoria Ave. in Brookside a beer of the month was announced.  This isn’t just any beer.  It is from our hometown rock stars Hanson.
Taylor Hanson was nice enough to sit down and talk about beer with me before the official visit to promote Mmmhops at the restaurant.  Taylor and his brother Isaac collaborated with Mustang’s brewmaster Gary Shellman to produce Mmmhops. The beer is well-balanced American pale ale that is easy to drink with a nice malt and hop balance.

I am not sure why there were so many ladies there, I am guessing they found out I was going to be there. OK, OK, more likely they heard that Taylor Hanson was going to show up.  All of them were eager to tell me their Hanson stories.  One had seen all of their concerts at Cain's Ballroom, another has been a fan since the second grade.  A group of ladies had ordered Cosmos but promised me they were getting Mmmhops next. I watched and they did.

Taylor has been around the world so he knows about beers and community.    “Beer is one of those things like apple pie, it is one of the great bonding compounds that go with life all over the world, but in America that hey I am going to have a cold beer after a long day, is something that brings people together.  It literally brings people from all walks together from your pastor to a biker to a 22-year-old college guy -- everybody can still raise a glass together.” Taylor said.
Taylor is all about community.  He brings people together with his music and wants to do that with his beer.  “ I hope with Mmmhops we can actually get these kinds of people to mingle, beer is something people can share.”
“We are trying to encourage people to walk down from the grocery store, find the liquor store and try something that is different.  It is about cultivating the Oklahoma craft beer scene as much as it is about increasing the outreach to try different beer that they might not know it s is even out there.”
From the crowd last night, I do think they will follow Hanson to whatever they may create.  The Hansons are getting ready to leave Tulsa and head to the UK and Europe for concerts and I am sure to promote their beer too. http://www.hanson.net/site/sections/22

NEW
Message From The Band

The North American portion of the ANTHEM World Tour has come to an end. Even though it is always bittersweet to end something that is going so well, we were happy to finish this tour in Charlotte, NC with an audience that seemed equally ready to follow us on our upcoming European tour as they were excited to be sharing in the final notes of this one! This was a really good run. It is hard to speak to what exactly makes one tour better than the next, but this was a great one for us. Friends have a lot to do with it. We were lucky to share the stage with some very talented musicans, Paul McDonald (and posse) and David Ryan Harris, we have an amazing crew that keep the bus and a million other things rolling in the right direction each day, and an incredibly talented band that back us up each night whether we are playing a HANSON classic or a bad rendition of "Livin' La Vida Loca". Even though being a band is a lot of work, when you have good people around you helping to bear the load, you almost forget.
We are all happy to be off the road this week to get a little R&R and spend Thanksgiving with our families. We have a lot to be thankful for!

Full House at the Pabst Theater 2013 - ANTHEM World Tour - Milwaukee, WI
We have just completed an amazing North American leg of the ANTHEM World Tour. This pic was captured by Taylor during an exciting moment at the concert in Milwaukee earlier this fall. Thank you to everyone who joined us, we can't wait until the next time!

Mad Zac is back!

A few months ago we saw a side of the sweet, gentle and always smiling Zac that we haven't seen before. It all started in Richmond, VA (Sep 5th) with a beautiful solo performance of him singing "Lullabelle" getting constantly interrupted by a screaming woman in the crowd, and ended up with him stopping in the middle of the song and putting that lady in her place by telling her to shut up. That day we learned that you do not mess with Zac when he's singing, biatch!!

Apparently the two dudes that attended to the show in Charlotte, NC last week weren't aware of that. The story was sort of the same: Hanson was doing a hypnotizing acapella version of "Too Much Heaven" by the Bee Gees when two men thought it would be funny to scream things like "I love you" and "I love you too" while the boys were singing. But this time they didn't stop, they just kept singing and ignoring the jokes coming from the audience. After they sang the last note, it was time for Super-Zac to do his job and save the night! This is what he responded to the screaming men (minute 3:05):

"Everybody...apparently those two dudes really love each other so I wanted to make sure you guys let them come together. Let me say, there is a great spot in the back for them to make out. Thank you very much."

BAM!! EPIC WIN! And he didn't even use a single swear word. That is what we call a classy throwback! And no one can do it better than ZHan. Go Zac, woot!!

Another one bites the...prank?: Hanson pranks David Ryan Harris

And so, we knew it. Hardcore, passionate fans that have attended and/or kept track of the Hanson shows during the years saw this coming, somehow. Because when it is about the last show of a long Hanson tour where a new opener artist ends his journey it only means one thing: prank time! Yes. This time was the time for David Ryan Harris to fall in the trap. Harris has joined Hanson in the past month or so as an opener for the second half of shows of the US/Canada leg of the Anthem World Tour, which ended in Charlotte, NC on November 20th, 2013.

Hanson and his crew could not wait for the last song of the opening act to end when they interrupted the performance by playing a very particular and pretty funny song on every speaker of the venue. As soon as Harris turned around they showed up on stage forming a line while dancing ridiculously throughout the stage. Did we mention that Taylor had a box in his head? See it for yourself below:

No one is safe. Future openers, watch your back!

The Anthem World Tour started in Buenos Aires (Argentina) on July 18th, made its way through USA and Canada from September to November, starts the European leg on December 3rd in Glasgow (UK) and ends on December 17th in Milan (Italy). Click here to see if it hits your city and get tickets now!

Ike's Birthday

On November 17th, 2013 Isaac turned 33 years old, and what could be better for a band guitarist than to celebrate it while on Tour?
As the day went on he got some presents from fans (even days before his actual birthday) and by the time they were doing the show, as a tradition in the Hanson history of shows, they prepared a little unusual surprise for the birthday boy, or we should say, the birthday Old Man! Moncton fans were the lucky ones to witness it and join the birthday celebration.
After they finished the Acoustic set with "Hand In Hand" being played in a solo version by the night's host, everyone backstage took their places on stage and started playing "Living La Vida Loca" as Taylor showed up with a chocolate cake in hand. As if that wasn't enough, Taylor also caused many heart attacks in the crowd when he began dancing to the music with some particular movements that only the strongest fans can handle. Watch the video below:

After the show Isaac thanked the fans and the crew on Twitter:

...and Taylor also tweeted and instagram picture of the earlier "lucky" cake:

Message From The Band

The ANTHEM World Tour is still in full swing, but we are winding closer to the end of the North American Leg (hard to believe). We are having a great time in Canada, with a second show in Halifax tonight and outside of the tour itself we have TON of stuff going on at HANSON HQ.
Last week we started sharing a special clip of a song from the new ANTHEM Live In NY DVD which we are continuing to do each week as we head into the holidays. This week it's a clip of Already Home. Check it out here.
We also have the new documentary Re-Made In America which is our most in depth portrait of an album's musical creation and it shares a lot about the story behind thisrecord. The Elves at the 3CG workshop wanted us to also remind you about some really great new merch, plus our Christmas gift wrapping which we love this year.
There's a lot going on, as we speak, but there's also some anticipation and planning for the kickoff of next year starting with our return to Jamaica for our second Back To The Island destination concert! As some of you know from our earlier announcement, friends Paul McDonald and Matt Wertz are going to join us for the event which is going to be a blast. Each of us is also doing a solo concert for the FIRST TIME. There's a lot more fun activities, but I think I might be extra excited just because I am picturing myself on a beach right now. We hope you will be there, and if you are not already planning to come, grab one of the last couple rooms HERE.
Thanks for continuing to be a part of this amazing music community. We will see on you the road and online!

Hanson fans walk to raise awareness of poverty, AIDS in Africa

Hanson on Hanson: a few things that define Tulsa’s band of brothers

Oklahoma's trio of blond-mopped brothers, most famous for their breakout 1997 single MMMBop, have been performing together for 21 years. They have always written their own tunes and played their own instruments. They still tour the world regularly.

But when we sit down at the Thompson Hotel this past summer, Taylor (now 30), Zac (28) and Isaac Hanson (32) – now all brunettes, actually – aren't particularly hell-bent on proving themselves. By now, they seem settled and confident as a self-run band who certainly don't have the fame they once did, but don't seem to mind, either.

They've got southern charm and friendliness to spare. They're also very professional, media-familiar in the way most former child stars are, and focused on promoting their sixth studio album, Anthem, whose supporting tour they bring to the Danforth Music Hall Saturday (November 9).

It seems like you always have a novel approach to your live shows.

Zac: Some of the early people we worked with – business partners and managers – were all big fans of the jam band scene. One thing we pulled from them was the idea that each concert is an individual experience, which is part of building the relationship with your fans, giving them the sense that they’re always going to get something special. It’s not a broadway show where you’re going to hit your marks every night. There's supposed to be risk.

Taylor: It’s not just, "We’re here to go through the city and check it off the box." It’s a calling card. Our statement about who we are as a band is very much about the community, very much about the show. A lot of people know Hanson for having pop hits, but really what makes Hanson is that relationship with the fans.

You guys have released albums at a really civilized pace. Is that because you want some normalcy and downtime?

Taylor: Honestly, we have a long track we have to run every album. We have, thankfully, fans in different parts of the world, and the truth is we’ve tried to do it faster but it always ends up being about three years because it usually takes us about two to make the rounds.

We take our records really seriously as far as the production goes. We really like to fine-tune it. We’re just old-school I guess. As much as we like to cram it out, it almost always ends up being a three-year cycle.

Is that track exhausting?

Zac: It plays two roles. It’s exhausting but it also exhausts you of that process, allowing you to be ready to come back and write another record.

Taylor: We really believe in the idea of shorter cycles, the concept of it. We would love to be in a place where we could be releasing shorter pieces of music with more consecutive release. But there is a physical positive and negative, which is, if you want to be a touring band and you want to connect with your fans, you can only get so many places in so many days.

Isaac: There is actually one other thing to say, too, which is we actually record a five-song EP for our fan club every single year.

Taylor: That’s one of the ways that the core fans don’t feel completely starved. In the future, signing up to be in the community is where it’s going. People pay 40 bucks a year to be a part of the fan club and that includes extra music and access to web stuff and lots of events that we do. The truth is, few people are actually buying albums these days. It’s not long before we feel like anyone that's actually going to buy a record might as well be in the fan club.

You’re selling me on the fan club right now.

Isaac: There’s literally more music for the fan club than there is mass releases. Collectively.

You're all family men, so how do you balance all of that output with your family time?

Zac: Balance is not a great word for what we do. You really just have to live in the moment and focus on what’s in front of you and be really present when you are with your family.

Isaac: Being married or being a parent doesn’t necessarily quote on quote “change” you. It’s a different part of your life, it’s an important part of your life, but it doesn’t mean that just because I got married, just because I had kids, that I stop being a musician. No, the antithesis of that.

Thank god we’re not doing tours of Iraq, getting shot at. You know? There are a lot of guys and a lot of girls that have situations where they’re gone a lot from their family.

Most of the other acts that were charting during your peak have long since disbanded. How much of your longevity is because you’re a family and because you’re brothers?

Zac: Ultimately, what holds a band together is not that. It's the quality of the relationships and keeping those good and realizing that, once you go there, once you act like an asshole, you’ve always gone that far. So you have to really be conscious of your interactions with each other and not let yourself become a stereotype of what bands are like.

Taylor: Just to bring it back to the album: this record’s called Anthem. In a lot of ways, it’s like a self-titled album. These songs are anthemic to us. And hopefully become anthems for our fans. But when we started off, we had a plan to record it and write it in pieces. And release it [piece by piece] last year. And we hit a total brick wall. Internally we were all just up in each other’s space. We were clashing.

Isaac: Actively

Zac: There were swords and shields.

Taylor: We’re not a band that would have just fallen apart by accident, but we definitely had to say: do we want to make another record? And that's what defines Hanson: the decision to rethink and recalibrate and come back to music. Ten years ago when we started the label, most bands would have broken up. But we chose to find a way to keep doing it, and really, it’s not because of some broad metaphoric reason. It is about the music, this is what we do, and we’re too stubborn to quit. And this record, it’s probably our best. And six albums in, 21 years in, we feel like we're making our best music.

Message From The Band

We are back! It is not like we really left but after two weeks of rest we are back on the road. The bus is already getting the unavoidable funk that comes with confining 10 adult males to a 45ft long land going submarine. Each member of the band and crew has fallen comfortably into their little nook of the bus, sticking their nose into whatever helps them cope with the lack of space and privacy. We have already had a bus dance party, and a meats and cheeses after show get together and we have only had the new bus for three days which is a good sign…

Pop-rock band Hanson will headline First Night, Central New York's New Year's Eve celebration at Onondaga Lake Park in Liverpool.
County Executive Joanie Mahoney announced this year's First Night celebration will be free for the first time ever, paid for by Burdick Chevy at Driver's Village. In previous years, the New Year's Eve celebration cost $5 in advance and $8 at the gate.
Hanson rose to stardom and heartthrob status when their debut album "Middle of Nowhere" topped pop music charts in 1997. Brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac will perform their hit single "MMMBop" at First Night along with several original songs.
"The musical headliner will be very familiar if you grew up in the 1990s or had children in the 1990s," said Ed Levine, president and CEO of Galaxy Communications. "While 'MMMBop' is what they're primarily known for, in the last 5-7 years they've developed a whole new generation of fans."

Levine first heard Hanson's music when his now-25-year-old daughter listened to them in '90s.
"There's a lot of age groups I think are going to be covered with this band," said Mahoney.
In its fourth year, "First Night was created as a central point where families could gather in a safe environment for an alcohol-free New Year's Eve," said Levine.
"The commissioner, county executive and myself looked at [First Night] last year and said, how could we take very good, and make it great?" Levine said. "The easy answer is a low ticket price, but how about no ticket price?"

Burdick Chevy and Driver's Village partnered with Galaxy and the county to pay for First Night expenses, so admission could be free. It is the first year for Burdick to sponsor this event.
This year, the Onondaga Parkway will kept open and shuttle buses will no longer bring attendees to the grounds as they did in previous years. With free admission and more parking, Levine hopes this year will bring record-breaking attendance.
"We expect thousands upon thousands of people there on New Year's Eve," he said.
The upcoming Wegmans Lights on the Lake display, now in its 24th year, will begin to illuminate the park starting November 19.

New additions to Lights on the Lake include a 47-ft. long Beauty and the Beast display, 42 ft. wide Robin Hood display and a 33-ft. tall animated tornado in the 'Wizard of Oz' display.
Onondaga County ParksCommissioner Bill Lansley said 30 percent of last year's Lights on the Lake show was lit by energy-efficient LED lights. This year's show approaches 75 percent.
"We've seen a dramatic decrease in our electricity bills," said Lansley. "It's a very colorful show and now very energy efficient."
Lansley said it's their goal to eventually use 100 percent LEDs for Lights on the Lake.
Although Wegmans hasn't been the presenting sponsor every year, Wegmans has made financial contributions to Lights on the Lake since its inception. This year, it takes acts as head sponsor for Lights on the Lake.
